I went outside today….

Crocus_3710 It was another glorious day of sunshine, much needed after the longest winter I can remember since I moved to Tennessee waaaay back in January, 1980.  I almost thought I was back living in Chicago (a great city that I still love).  But no matter, winter is  over now!  The last of the maple sap is dripping into my bucket (yes, I made maple syrup this year – quite the adventure!), the crocuses are showing their bright purple, and the tulips are peeking little tiny green tips through the dirt.  Life is good.

I also got a good start on the redesign of  the Lavender Cottage website.  Not a lot there yet, but the ‘bones’ are done, ideas are flowing, and I am enjoying the process.  It’s been a year and a half since I left my job as a computer programmer, and it feels good to get my head back into geeky technical things for a bit.  So, that is why no Saturday Night at the Market or Sunday Morning Coffee and Etsy this week.  I do have some great finds, though, and I will be posting about them next weekend.  StarsintheMist3

Meanwhile, I’ll be working hard on new designs, orders and just breathing in the fine spring breezes each day.  I did make a new ring this week that I’m thrilled about with the beautiful star sapphire I’ve had stashed away for a long time.  It will be a hard one to part with, indeed!

Hope you all have a fine week, and that spring breezes are blowing your way, too!

Saturday Night at 1000 Markets - 3/21/09

With the arrival of Spring, and Easter just around the corner, I thought my first spring garden photos, plus a bit of whimsy and rabbits were in order for the 1000 Markets shopping post this week. I love sweet little rabbits (unless they're eating my garden plants) and I was thrilled when I saw this great garden bench at our local salvage store a couple of years ago.

You can see what a messy gardener I am, too. I never clean up the previous year's garden until spring so the birds have goodies to eat all winter.
Isn't that a lovely reason to not do the fall 'cleanup' chores? My little tulip patch is getting ready to bloom, though, so it's time to get busy now!

It's also time to start dreaming of my wonderful fragrant Rugosa rose blooms - my sweet Moje Hammarburg is off to a great start already. Check out those thorns, too. (but I love her anyway)

Now, on to the spring shopping....

I fell in love with the whimsical art in the Blue Dog Rose shop the instant I saw it. I love the delightful creatures peeking out everywhere in her paintings. In my little dream world, this is how things would be - all the different creatures (including us, ha ha) living together in perfect harmony. My favorite painting is her Crossing the Lake limited edition print. I can just see a child's room decorated in this theme - or better yet, my studio wall! Her rabbits remind me of the rabbit in the wonderful story of The Velveteen Rabbit, recently mentioned in Nicola's last blog post.

Another painting that caught my eye is the Mushrooms and a Nap limited edition print. This one reminds me of my introduction to wild mushrooms on one of our family vacations near Rhinelander, Wisconsin. The family in the cabin next door to ours happened to be mushroom experts, and they took us on a mushroom hunt in the woods. We dined that evening on sauteed mushrooms that made me a mushroom lover for the rest of my life. One of these days I'm going to get someone to take me out hunting for the delectable Morels that everyone loves so much. Tennessee has wonderful wild plants, including great morels, so I'm hoping to find some one of these days.

Or, how about a dozen fabulously decorated Spring Mix cookies from Cake Box Cookies? I have been dreaming of some cookies from this shop ever since they first opened their 1000 Markets storefront. Not only are they beautiful, but their customers say they taste great, too, with just the right amount of soft and sweet, plus a hint of lemon. YUM!

If you're still dreaming of last year's garden, here is a perfect necklace for you from Bluhealer's shop. Called "Dreaming of Before" it is a beautiful glass vessel pendant, adorned with pansies and rosebuds. In fact, she has several other pansy pieces in her "Winter Garden" collection, and every one of them is gorgeous!

Not only does Bluhealer do lovely glasswork, she also has beautiful enamel work as well. (I am dying to try enamel myself!). These lovely "Summer Fields" earrings whisper of the warmth that is yet to come with lovely clover green enamel on 18 gauge copper adorned with dainty flower murrini.

So, that is all for now, as my own garden is calling my name. I must go out commence my new year of gardening.......see you all later!

Saturday Night at the Market - 03/08/09

I went to bed early last night, so I'd be ready to enjoy the great spring day today, therefore no midnight market shopping last night. I'm shopping hearty this morning, though, with my cup of coffee and gorgeous warm sunshine! I am just itching to get out in the mountains with my camera. The picture above is a beautiful trillium from the Asheville, Any Way You Like It website. I'm so lucky to live near this great city and the nearby mountains. On to the shopping now...

Continuing with the idea of highlighting different techniques each week, (forgot about that last week, oops..) this week we are looking at doll making. I once worked with someone who made exquisite Victorian dolls, and I was always in total awe of her work. I decided to search 1000 Markets for dolls and see what wonders are being created.

The first one I found is not exactly a Victorian beauty, but I can definitely identify with her - meet '50 at the Beach' from Crazy Art Dolls' studio. She was created from sculpey clay, and is described as a "seasoned older women who feels self-confident in her bikini and sunscreen. You can see her down at the beach soaking up the local color and checking out the younger men."

Ha, ha - I may not be self-confident in a bikini, but checking out the younger men sounds like a good way to spend some time! Too bad the nearest beach is probably 300 miles from here, oh well... maybe I can kiss a frog instead, like this adorable daddy frog with his little tadpole, another wonderful clay piece from Crazy Art Dolls.

Then we have Major Thimmes, a stuffy old British gentlemen on his way to the golf course. Wonder what he'd think of Miss 50 at the Beach? The Major is from Studio 2n3d, and has been created using needle sculpting and paper clay techniques. He "likes to have a pint, smoke his pipe, and brag about the day's near misses, hole-in-one, and of course the other guy's mulligans."

And I completely adore "Dancing Her Dream", also from Studio 2n3d. I think I'm going to make this my motto - I am definitely 'dancing my dream' these days! This joyful little doll is just the perfect expression of pure happiness - we should all be dancing our dreams!

And speaking of sunshine and happiness and dancing, today's 1000 Markets' Search Engine Find is based on the words 'yellow, sun, happy', and brought up this perfect little card from Emerlye Arts paper shop. Take a minute to check out the beautiful paper art in her shop - I especially love her Visionary Themes collection.

That's all for now, as I must get the day going. Many pretties to make today!

Sunday Morning Coffee and Etsy - 02/22/09

Well, my plan was to photograph my beautiful crocus patch and wax poetic about the joy of approaching spring for a minute before I started my Etsy shopping this morning. Are you as unimpressed by this morning's photo as I am? Sigh...... Yes, I know it could be worse, but I've been 'globally warmed' for the past few years, and have forgotten how to deal with an actual winter. Okay, I'm done whining now, thank you for listening..... on to the shopping!

I'm in a random kind of mood this morning, so I headed over to the Etsy Treasuries for my search. Treasuries are collections that are put together or 'curated' by Etsy members to showcase items that they have selected for reasons almost as varied as the items themselves. The only real rule is that the items must not be your own. This is such a popular activity on Etsy that it is almost impossible to snag an opportunity to create one without becoming a Treasury "stalker". Here is a great how-to article from Etsy on the ins and outs of capturing a Treasury slot. It's been a while since I've created one, so I'm on the prowl myself for the next opening.

Browsing treasuries is a little different than other Etsy browsing in that only the titles are listed, rather than thumbnail pictures, so an eye-catching title is important.

The treasury title that caught my eye this morning is The Painter's Dream, a collection curated by Fell Painter. Her description of where she is from explains the captivating outdoorsy feel to her work: "I'm from the North of England, known for its dramatic landscape, changeable weather and stoical, tea-drinking inhabitants." she says in her shop profile. I have always loved everything about England, and would probably live there if I could. I've spent many lovely days driving the countryside of Surrey, in the Southeast, and the wild hills of Scotland, but have not yet made it to the fells of Yorkshire. And just what exactly is a fell? Strictly defined, it is: a hill; an upland tract of waste, pasture or moorland. Somehow, I think a painting does the term much more justice!

Fell Painter's work perfectly captures the feel of the countryside of northern England, especially this one titled 'Evening Clouds'. I can just imagine the brisk breeze and a slight cooling in the air as the sun starts sinking toward the horizon. Her work is done in oils on canvas, board or paper, and in petite sizes that make originals very affordable.

One of my favorite paintings from the treasury selections is from the shop of Small Impressions, titled Hillside Barn. Nancy also uses a small format and oils for her paintings, which capture perfectly the beauty of the American countryside. The warm sunny feeling in this painting is the perfect contrast to the cold snow outside today.

One more delight for the senses that I found in this treasury is the silk painting done by Mystic Silks. Her shop name really describes her work well - her paintings do take on a mystical quality from the way the paint takes to the silk fabric.

I'd love to see one of these in person, especially this stunning Monarch butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. The contrast between the crisp clarity of the wings and the dreamy background is mesmerizing.

Her shop also has several paintings on silk pillows, and I particularly love the soft greens with the vibrant orange of the fish in her Aquarium Silk Pillow.

Alas, my second cup is finished, and I must get on with the day, so that's all for now. I am planning on finishing and photoing some new work today (finally, it's been on the bench all week, am I slow or what?) so I might have a few new pictures to share later today or tomorrow. See you all later!

Antique Soochoo Jade - Yummy!!

This jade has got to be one of the most beautiful stones I have ever used in my jewelry. Each piece is a miniature abstract watercolor with muted tones of sagey greens, peach, olive, and gold. The pendant here reminds me of a sunset, and is my favorite of all the stones in my last purchase of this treasure. The necklace pairs the jade with the muted tones of rhyolite nuggets, and freshwater pearls. I really think this is my favorite necklace I have ever made!

Speaking of the spring garden....

A necklace composed of milky aquamarine, sterling silver and a huge Karen Hill Tribe silver butterfly. I really love the milky aquarmarine, and am hoping to get more of it when the wholesale gem show passes through this area again in May. This shade of bluish green is one of the "new" colors for Spring 2007 - 'ocean waves' ..... just lovely, I think. Now it's time to go page through the seed catalog for a new butterfly bush for the garden......

Over-the-top Spring charm bracelet

The !WetCanvas community is such a source of inspiration for me - I am definitely in the mood for spring now, thanks to the charm exchange I participated in. Participants in the exchange created two "artful" charms for each person in their group based on the theme chosen by each person. My theme was "the garden", and there were 10 people in my group, meaning that I received 20 garden-themed handmade charms. I, in return made 20 charms based on 10 different themes - now that kept the creative juices flowing! This project was started last November, and just finished up at the end of January with the delivery of all of our charms. I added a couple of my own charms, made a pearl bracelet to hang the charms on, and am now the proud owner of a masterpiece of creativity! This bracelet will be a happy reminder of my friends at !WC for years to come!

Fresh Color

This necklace is another piece that was inspired by a WetCanvas! WAF theme-- one of artist Shannon Bowley's paintings. (shannonbowley.com)

I find that I really enjoy designing to a theme - it gets the mind going in new directions and gives inspiration for new collections. This one just might be the beginning of next Spring's new collection....hmmmmm.
